Life Co Church: Better Audio and Acoustics Without Replacing the PA
Life Co Church in Chester, Virginia completed a major sanctuary renovation with theater-style seating, a redesigned stage, and a completely transformed room. The renovation improved the space visually, but changing the room also changed how the existing sound system performed.
A new PA system was not part of the project budget. After evaluating the room and the existing equipment, Qohr determined that replacing the complete PA was not necessary. The better investment was to reposition, update, treat, and retune the system around the renovated sanctuary.
The Challenge
Life Co's existing QSC line arrays had been positioned for the sanctuary's previous layout. After the renovation, the arrays no longer distributed sound evenly across the new seating area, and the front rows received limited coverage.
The harder surfaces introduced during construction also increased reflections and reverberation. Even with a capable loudspeaker system, excessive room energy made speech more difficult to understand and reduced clarity throughout the sanctuary.
The church needed more consistent coverage and better speech intelligibility without spending the budget required for a complete loudspeaker replacement.
How Qohr Improved the Existing Church Sound System
Repositioning the Existing QSC Line Arrays
Qohr repositioned the existing QSC line arrays farther apart to better serve the renovated seating layout. This allowed Life Co to continue using equipment it already owned while improving how the main system distributed sound across the room.
Adding EAW Front-Fill Loudspeakers
EAW front-fill loudspeakers were installed along the stage lip to provide dedicated coverage for the first rows. The fills cover the area closest to the stage that the main arrays could not serve evenly, creating a smoother transition from the front of the sanctuary to the back.
Updating the Audio Processing
The existing audio processor had reached the end of its useful life, so Qohr replaced it with a Q-SYS Core. The updated processing provides the routing, equalization, timing, level control, and system management needed to align the mains and front fills for the renovated room.
Reducing Echo With Acoustic Treatment
Primacoustic acoustic panels were installed to reduce reflections and excessive reverberation created by the room's harder surfaces. Treating the room gave both speech and music a more controlled acoustic environment and allowed the sound system to work more effectively.
Retuning the Complete System
After the loudspeakers, processing, and acoustic treatment were in place, Qohr retuned and balanced the complete system. This final step aligned the equipment with the new seating layout and helped create a more consistent listening experience across the sanctuary.
The Result
Life Co now has more even sound coverage from the front rows through the rest of the sanctuary, clearer speech, and a room that sounds more controlled after the renovation.
Most importantly, the church achieved those improvements without purchasing an entirely new PA system. The project budget was directed toward the changes that would make the greatest audible difference: loudspeaker placement, front-fill coverage, signal processing, acoustic treatment, and final system tuning.
